Photographing another photographer’s wedding always feels like a real compliment, and Austin and Dianne’s wedding at Palm Court Hotel in Aberdeen was such a brilliant day to be part of.

Austin is a fellow photographer, so there was an extra layer of trust in being asked to capture the day. I also had Alan Farmer with me as second photographer, which worked really well for this wedding. Alan brought his Aberdeen knowledge, helped lead us into a few strong location choices, and added some posing direction for parts of the couple portraits. It gave the day a lovely balance between documentary coverage, classic portraits and playful moments.

The day itself was full of personality from the very beginning. Dianne’s details had a real sparkle to them, jewellery, shoes, perfume, flowers, sunglasses, and all the little pieces that tell the story before anyone even walks down the aisle. There was a lovely sense of fun running through everything, which suited the whole feel of the wedding.

Palm Court Hotel worked beautifully for the ceremony and celebration. It has that warm, intimate feel that suits a wedding where the guests are close, involved and very much part of the story. The ceremony space felt personal, and when Austin and Dianne walked back down the aisle together, the room had that brilliant “they’ve done it” energy.

One of my favourite moments was the confetti outside the front of Palm Court. It was colourful, chaotic and full of joy, exactly what a confetti shot should be. The building itself gives a strong backdrop too, especially with the couple on the balcony and the guests gathered below for the big group photograph. It gave the gallery a proper Aberdeen hotel wedding feel.

After the ceremony, we headed out for portraits around Aberdeen. This is where having Alan with me was especially useful, as we moved through a few locations and made the most of the city. Fittie/Footdee gave us texture, history and character, narrow streets, stone walls, little details, and that slightly quirky Aberdeen coastal feel. It was a lovely contrast to the polished hotel setting.

Austin and Dianne were brilliant together in front of the camera. Some of the portraits are classic and elegant, especially the ones around the stone steps, but there are also plenty that feel relaxed and very them. I love when a gallery has both: the frame-worthy portraits and the daft, joyful, slightly unexpected photographs that remind you what the day actually felt like.

The reception had a proper party feel. There were so many good guest reactions, funny moments and little bits of chaos, in the best possible way. The cardboard-box photo booth setup was an absolute gift. It brought out everyone’s personality and created one of those brilliant wedding collages that people will keep going back to.

Austin and Dianne’s wedding was stylish, warm, funny and full of character. It had the structure of a classic hotel wedding, but with enough personality, colour and humour to make it completely their own.
